Moving a socket
There are many reasons why you may need to relocate an electrical outlet. One of the most common situations is to install a TV on the wall.
Disconnect the power
To protect yourself from electrical hazards, it is important that you disconnect the power at the breaker before you begin.
If you don’t have a meter, you can also plug a light into the outlet you are routing and turn it on. Flip the switches one at a time – if it goes out, you’ve found the right breaker.
Choose the right socket
Recessed boxes are the type of electrical boxes typically used when you’re working with an already finished wall. A recessed outlet box allows you to connect all the wires and cables inside the wall surface.
Decide where you want the TV on the wall
Decide where on the wall you want your flat screen to hang, at what height, and which studs it will be attached to. To do this, you need to mark the arrangement of the screws on the bracket on the wall.
Choosing a location for the electrical box
Unlike regular standard outlets that screw to the wall studs, a recessed outlet has clamps that can be rotated 90° so that their tabs extend behind the drywall once you turn the locking screws, which then screw the clamping tabs further down until the outlet is firmly seated against the wall.
Check for obstructions
A flush-mount box with multiple wall plates usually requires an opening large enough to check the inside of the wall for obstructions, such as fire bars.
– Attach a 2.5 cm spade and possibly a spade extension to a drill.
– Place the spade against the obstruction in the wall and at least 5 cm away from the studs to avoid nails, and drill a hole through the obstruction.
Laying the cable in the hole
If the cable is coming from above, you should find that the cable runs along the wall. Simply cut the cable long enough and pull it in. If you want to keep the old outlet active as well, all you have to do is make the connections in the flush-mount box.
